The report will cover the study which scope was to investigate the discrimination of L2 English contrasts by Greek speakers and the effect of phonological short-term memory (PSTM) and IQ on L2 speech perception.
The participants of the study were adult monolingually-raised Greek speakers. They completed an AX discrimination task, a digit span test, and the Raven’s Standard Progressive matrices test. Another group of British English speakers completed the AX test and served as controls. Data were analyzed with the use of Bayesian regression models.
The results demonstrated that Greek speakers had below chance discrimination for the majority of L2 vowel contrasts and that the control group performed better for most contrasts. In addition, there was no evidence that speakers with high PSTM discriminate the L2 contrasts more accurately than speakers with low PSTM, but strong evidence that speakers with high IQ discriminate some L2 contrasts more accurately than speakers with low IQ.
The study provides the first insights into the effect of IQ on L2 speech perception, demonstrating either a direct or direct link between nonverbal IQ and L2 phonetic abilities.
